Is one agent to enable effective noninvasive treatment. The announcement of breakthrough therapy designation by the FDA, suggests that SDF may become the first FDA-approved drug for treating caries. Breakthroughs in elucidating the impact of SDF on the dental plaque microbiome inform potential opportunities for understanding caries arrest. SDF can be added to the set of evidence-based noninvasive methods to treat caries lesions in primary teeth.
CAMBRA
Dental caries is the disease that can lead to cavities if left untreated. Tooth decay is an infection that can be prevented. Cavities are the end result of acids produced by oral bacteria. The acids remove minerals from our teeth, but these minerals can be replaced. Given the right care, our teeth can repair themselves. Brushing and flossing alone is sometimes not enough to avoid decay. Fillings and crowns repair the damage done by this infection, but do not stop the process that caused the damage.
Sonoma County Dental Health Update
The challenges faced in Sonoma County regarding the oral health of children remain daunting. It remains the goal to have 75% of all children be cavity free. The cost are manifesting not only in dollars but in the impact in learning, medical complications, school absences and referrals to Child Protective Services. A survey of the dental health of the community is performed every two years. This current report will show what changes have occurred and where we currently stand.
