What are the different types of dentist?
Dentists are people who hold specialized degrees in dentistry, such as DDS or DMD. Often, a dentist will go in to a specialized field, like the ones described below, that may take many additional years of school and training specific for their specialty.
These dental professionals specialize with the inner parts of the tooth. When you need a root canal or any other procedure that will treat the nerve and inner soft tissue, then you will be treated by an Endodontist.
A general dentist may treat any number of dental issues that do not require a specialist. Often, a general dentist will fill cavities and other routine dental procedures. You may also find dental hygeinists at a general dental office for cleaning teeth.
These specialists deal with the mouth itself as well as the jaw. These surround structures of the face provide the structure and first layer of protection when it comes to outside intrusions. These surgeons will also handle teeth that require a more complicated extraction.
These are one of a variety of cosmetic dentist types that work on issues that are primarily aesthetic in nature. Orthodontists can deal with serious issues though, as they specialize in the alignment of teeth with respect to one another.
This specialty specializes in dealing with patients that are still children, physically or mentally. They have to know about baby teeth, dealing with patients with the mental acuity of a child, and more.
Specializing in the gums, soft tissues and bones that hold the teeth, any issue causing a recession or inflammation of the gums, the falling out of teeth or spontaneous motions of the teeth will require a periodontist.
If your teeth are missing or need to be removed, then you may want a prosthetic in place in order to disguise the fact that the teeth are missing. There are implants, crowns, dentures, bridges and other pieces that will provide a full smile.
