PDI: Pediatric Surgery Center
The Pediatric Dental Initiative of the North Coast (PDI) was formed in 2006 when a group of health providers, child advocates, social service programs, and public health programs from Sonoma, Mendocino, and Lake counties joined forces to address unmet oral health needs for low income children. PDI runs 2 full surgery operatories seeing roughly 10 children a day whose dental problems are so severe that they require surgery under general anesthesia. Since opening its doors in 2008, the staff of dentists, nurses, and anesthesiologists have treated over 15,000 children from 33 Northern California counties. Medi-Cal reimburses a good portion of the treatment expense, but not all, and it does not cover replacing equipment, transportation help for needy families, or community outreach and education programs which include two Promotores and a full-time in-house oral health educator. PDI makes several fundraising efforts each year to supplement their budget, including the annual Make Kids Smile Award Dinner in October.
